A few weeks ago, I went to see Aloe Blacc at Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. Although his ‘I Need a Dollar’ is getting pretty commercial and played a million times a day, I was convinced he would a put up a great show thanks to some of his previous recordings I saw.
Once the show started, I was immediately blown away by the drummer. You rarely hear such a tight drummer, playing his instrument as if he was born there. With his two snares and kicking bass drum he made Aloe Blacc sound so much more powerful and funky, something I was hoping for.
Aloe Blacc was of course brilliant in his appearance. A lot more confident than I expected, he came on stage in suit, educating the crowd what soul was all about. He even made the crowd do a soul train! And naturally he had to promote his album, which he did by letting the crowd say ‘Good Things’ at least 50 times.
Every song got a special live version which was nice to hear, and all songs followed up pretty quickly, keeping the concert interesting. He, of course, ended with ‘I Need a Dollar’, which he remixed to a reggae and latin version afterwards. Very powerful and a great way to end an awesome concert.
If you have the time to see him, please check him out. It’s a marvelous show he puts up. Check Kmeron’s pictures to get a feeling of his show.
And on another note: his last video is so nice! Properly honoring Michael Jackson. The video is shot by Ross Harris, which apparently is the small kid who comes into the cockpit in the marvelous movie Airplane. And the little dancer dancing in the movie clip is Miles Baby Boogaloo Brown, ain’t he awesome?
